Dear Canonical, Redux

Let’s elaborate. A “bug” was filed asking to add a “Sent using Ubuntu” signature by default to Evolution. How did this happen and who decided it was a bug? Judging by the way it was so quickly responded to, it seems like a decision made in Canonical behind closed doors and filed on Launchpad as a mere formality, with no input from users. The “bug” was then “fixed” by making Evolution copy the behavior of proprietary email interfaces like Microsoft Hotmail or Windows Live Foo or whatever its latest rebranding is called.

I won’t repeat again why I consider such a change bad. Once again, this was something forced on users with no public input. The discussion is happening in the bug report now, and the users are evidently less than pleased.

Meanwhile, the bug report stays as “Fix Released” (where “fix” means “make Evolution obnoxious”). A different bug was filed asking for this behavior to be reverted. It was closed as a duplicate of the original bug, despite being its exact opposite.

First the font, then the wallpaper, now this. What is going on with this release cycle?

Em whats wrong with the font? It was discussed at the lucid UDS to get the font. The design is good. The only major problem is that they did a closed beta.

there are reasons for not opening the font and the wallpaper was changed. the bug was marked duplicate by a community member so you cant blame canonical for that either.

Its just that some of the steps/decisions taken by Canonical recently have put off people in the ubuntu community, due to them being viewed as “proprietary/closed” or in some other way not “correct”.

I think there was an issue with the Firefox “Multisearch” extension/plugin last year as well, apart from the others recently !

The problem is that when people start asking relevant questions in bug reports/blogs , nobody seems to get any concrete answers for a long while and everybody just gets frustrated quite a bit.

I think the point I am trying to make is: COMMUNICATION is really necessary

Even if those “final” (where things WONT be changed for whatever reason) decisions are communicated clearly with the corresponding reasons for doing so, a lot of the controversies can be avoided !

I remember when SABDFL communicated that the window buttons decision was “final” and “this is what we are going to do”, there was at least some kind of finality about it.
Whereas the incompleteness (in terms of communication) of some other decisions is a bit unfortunate and leads to some of the arguments/complaints… etc. !

This is probably the only thing Canonical has ever done that I think is unnecessary.

…mostly because I have never, in my life, seen a mail client online, offline, inline, or out of line that even comes close to being worthy of licking Gmail’s toes—and frankly I think even shipping Evolution on is a straight-up waste of valuable CD space.

Bugs are not a place to discuss any issues you have with the change – can you send an email to u-d-d (and even CC sabdfl or Rick, who afair has reported the issue). The other bug is the same as this one – you miss the point of reporting bugs and keeping them around. They are for developers to keep track of issues. There is no reason to have two bugs about the same issue. And why do they always need an input from users… but this is a good topic for a discussion on both u-d-d and probably on UDS-N

kklimonda: I don’t think you’re right, there. If a change is made and someone has a reasoned argument that it was wrong and should be reverted, it is appropriate to open a new bug.

Otherwise the report simply becomes incomprehensible. If you leave the original bug title in place, the new proposal and discussion don’t make any sense without reading the entire bug history. If you change it to reflect the request to revert the bug, the discussion related to the initial change becomes nonsensical without interpretation.

Basically, making a change and reverting that change are (by definition) not the same process, so you can’t sensibly track both processes in a single issue. It just doesn’t work at a fundamental level. It’s correct to track them in separate issues.

ethana2: that’s kind of a pointless comment, isn’t it? Regardless of your personal opinion, there are clearly lots of people who use Evolution. What were you expecting to achieve with your comment? Cause all those people to have an epiphany, realize their mistake, and switch to GMail? You do realize that millions of people can’t possibly use GMail for at least some of their email because it would be against their employers’ company policies, right?

Thanks for your blog post. It’s the only place I’ve seen this bug and change discussed, so I otherwise wouldn’t have been aware of it, and I like to keep abreast of such things.

Having SABDFL simply state “this is how it is” may have given people finality, but for me, it was the wrong kind of finality. It was the finality of someone saying “I’ve listened to the hundreds of comments complaining about this change, and I’ve chosen to ignore you”.

I still use Ubuntu and still advocate it, but I can’t be passionate about it as I once was.

And yep, in every install of Ubuntu 10.04, the very first thing I have to do is download Ubuntu Tweak and revert the Window button placement. Sure, I could use another theme, but Ambiance is otherwise pretty good.

I wouldn’t recommend Ubuntu Tweak. It’s the kind of application whose number one bug is that users feel it has the need to exist.

Ideally I would like to see the button order configurable in Ubuntu’s default UI, but knowing Ayatana’s “our way or no way” pattern of thought, this seems unlikely to be implemented.

I think it’s tacky and obnoxious and only almost-sort-of makes sense on iPhones and Androids as a way of making excuses for top-posting, being short, and misspellings due to crappy keyboard. On a real computer, it’s a waste of bits.

Worth noting that I didn’t even know about Ubuntu-Tweak until the buttons thread raised its existence.

As long as Ubuntu-Tweak exists with options like this, I’m sad to say that Ayatana has failed. Still, it’s early days for that team (I think) and they’re a bunch of extremely sharp cookies, so fingers crossed that SABDAFL doesn’t railroad them too often with crazy decisions. Y’know, like sticking an Ubuntu sig on the bottom of every Evolution e-mail… :-)
